Having lived in Tempe from the age of 15 to 21, (I'm a graduate of ASU) I
find this thread 'amusing'. The secret got out, and it's a mecca for
everyone now, but that's "progress"!
Yes, there's a pollution problem in "the Valley", but hopefully AZ won't go
the way of our socialist neighbors in Kalifornia. If you're inclined to stay
in the city , well...stay in Phoenix, or better, go to LA or SanDiego. There
are solutions to be found, one of which is to keep the damned Yankees from
trying to grow green grass! (I claim TX as my residence now as a military
guy for a variety of reasons, nudge/wink) I experienced a law change with my
'67 bug in AZ that drove me nuts after they changed the law to include my
old car into the emissions requirement (without telling me until I was
"delinquent").
A short drive out of the 'valley' to the east and north will take you to a
quiet spot where your campfire will draw the howls and yaps of a hundred
coyotes -- an experience that can give you "perspective", if you know what I
mean. (don't worry, they're cowardly by nature) The desert at night has the
same power that a quiet beach does on the hormones, if you get my drift, and
much less chance of being approached than the beach! :)
If anyone wants a superb drive in an MG or any other sporting auto, the run
from Sedona to Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon is one of those
outstanding experiences in life. You must do it in the spring or fall on a
weekday, however, to avoid all the riff-raff in their RVs and such. Early on
a Sunday morning zooming throught the pines in the cool air with the sun
streaming onto the black top is, well, spirit-lifting, to say the least.
Another good drive is from Prescott up into the White Mountains toward
Strawberry and Snowflake...look it up on a map and you'll see what I mean.
Further into the mountains one can backpack into places where you can catch
a trout and fry it up in a campfire pan -- places that people don't venture
often -- another experience that cannot be described except to one's
tastebuds. But don't tell anyone, or this secret will be out too...hehe.
OOPS. ;)
