run it, let it cool off and then top it up. As to your temp guage, been
pretty cold lately, what was the temp in your kneck of the woods the
last time you ran it? If it was warm, you may have knocked the wire off
the temp guage while changing the pump. >>

Also, make sure the heater valve is OPEN. It should always be open when you
drain and refill the colling system.
