speedo don't work 1979 mgb

Hers what ive tried.  Put in a new cable before i installed it i hooked it to 
the speedo & it moved when i spun the cable.  I hooked it up & Nothing.  So i 
unhooked it from the speedo & went for a short spin the cable does not move.  
( The car has a standard 4spd)
So im thinking that the angle drive is junk.  i believe ive heard that you 
can get the longer o/d cacle & junk the angle drive any sugggestions?
