I have the opposite situation - A 1500 head on an 1800 blockin my MGA.
Compression pressure is just fine (144), but I seem to have quite a bit of power
(compared to my stock 1800 MGB).  I should have probably put in bigger valves, 
but
I'm getting 30 mpg, and running great this way.
