Your foreign car specialist is wrong, a little rattle is waiting to be a big
one.

Big end rod bearing(s).

You will need at least the bottom end. Don't drive the car or start the engine
until you check the rod/main bearings. The less damage they receive the cheaper
the repair.

Subject: knocking engine/help needed

I recently purchased a nice restored 74 cb mgb.The previous owner stated
the engine was rebuilt 8000 miles prior to the purchase. The engine
always rattled a little on start up but my "foreign car specialist"
assured me this was normal.I have only driven the car about 100 miles in
the 2 months i've owned it.Today the engine started to rattle LOUD as i
was driving it as soon as i relized it was the engine and not something
in the transmission, which was my first guess i shut it off.I removed the
valve cover and everything is intact and the" rattle now knock" is in
the bottom end. Will someone tell me what it most likely is?Will i be
needing a new engine? Thanks for any help you can offer.......

Greg
