Fill up your tank, to the top and drive around the neighborhood. Better yet
take your car somewhere else and drive it "spiritedly". Now stop the car
(with the parking brake applied please) and crawl under the car with a
flashlight or troublelight. Do you see any wetness on the tank or surrounds?
If so wipe your finger on it and smell it to confirm if it might be fuel. If
so you likely have a tank that is rotting from the top.
Good new tanks are available and are relatively cheap. Mainly from the kind
folks on this list and on ebay. Make sure you get the gaskets for the sender
and the bolt kit available also since the old bolts may be rusted away.
