If you are getting fuel and spark, the next question is
are they getting there at the right time?

Will it run on ether (starting fluid)? Yes, then it's a carb problem.

- Timing 180 degress out? (Is the ROTOR pointing at #1? at TDC, Both valves
closed) (don't laugh, I've spend several hours on that one...)
crank....crank....backfire is a good symptom.

- Are you getting full compression? Make a cheap compression gauge with a tire
pressure meter (0-100psi with a pressure release valve) and a rubber cork (or
fuel line and creative hacking of an anti-foul adapter or old spark plug).

I chased a bad ground strap for several hours too:
Symptoms are that it will crank, but current draw through other grounds drops
the voltage on the coil/pertronix and so no (or weak) spark. When starter
stopped, but engine was still rotating, voltage would come up at the coil and
cause one or two cylinders to fire, crank......sputter, sputter.
Check by measuring voltage at coil when cranking.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already checked for spark at the
plugs ... all good. Plug wires are lined up properly on the cap, with
#1 at TDC, and the rotor pointing to #1 plug wire. Elec fuel pump works
great, fuel getting to carbs without problems. Points set with correct
gap and spark there. Realigned the distrib and drive with timing marks
set and #1 at TDC ... was off by a click, but is correct now.

Still wants to start, but isn't ..... will recheck for spark and
replace the rotor button this morning and see what happens. Will also
check the earth strap .... hadn't done that yet.
