The 5 is the wheel width in inches, measured in between the beads (flanges)
on the rim.  J is the rim type, refering to the design of the flanges in
the bead area.  The J type wheel is still a widely used standard, and was
used on MGs from the last MGB at least as far back as the TDs.  This is why
tires for the VW Beetle will fit on my MGA (with 4Jx15 rims).
