Hi Brian,
    I've run into this problem many times.   You have to get the shoes
absolutely centralized or the drum is not going on and this can drive you
crazy. A Rubber hammer is a good choice or heavy leather gloves, just don't
stir up the  asbestos dust.   Wear a dust mask or even 2, just incase.
