As this is at the end of the rack, I would not worry.
Good that it all is clean now.
Time to get the new gaiter mounted and have the rack filled with 90 weight
oil.
Half a litre will do - sorry I'm metric.

Cheers,

Hans

Hello list,
Well, at the end of my front suspension/brakes/steering rebuild, I finally
got to the steering rack assembly. When I started, I found that one gaiter
had been ripped open for an undetermined amount of time. After lots of
degreaser and a big mess, the whole unit is clean (sort of...). Anyway, I
was expecting to possibly have to junk it because of wear, but surprisingly
everything looks good. Play between the pinion and the rack is barely
noticable!
The only question appears to be some discoloration on the rack at the end
that was exposed. It looks like heat discoloration. Should I worry about
this? It seems very minor, but I always check with knowledgable sources
when dealing with critical components such as this.
Thanks for any advice,
-Dan
