I do have one more comment I'd like to make.  Max has a good point with his 
message here.  The location might be dependent on
obstructions.  It turns out that my wife (5'2") can't see the passenger side 
fender mirror if it is mounted above the axle line.
The dash mounted rear view mirror blocks her view.  I, on the other hand, look 
right over the top of the rear view mirror and can
see the fender mirror no matter where I mount it.

I still haven't drilled holes yet!
