My 68 GT, which has the "bad type" of oil filter, suddenly has developed a
knocking sound in the engine. I used a garden hose to listen where the sound
comes from, but I cannot really hear wherefrom. Sounds like the bottom of
the fourth cylinder, but I am not sure. One of the charactaristics of the
sound is that it is not there when running stationary, but only when I
increase revs. When revs are up, and stable, all is OK again.

I have removed the bigend bearings, and showed them to the MG parts shop.
Allthough one of the bearings (yes, number 4) shows copper colour, the
dealer says that this could not be the problem. I should check main
bearings.

So I went home and removed the middle lower main bearings. No wear at all.

Next the oilpump. When removing the two rotors from the housing, there is
more wear than allowed. But when it is in, there is hardly any wear. I must
say that the surface of the inner rotor looks like it has transprted some
metal practicals, though.

Now my questions are:

How big is the chance that the pump is shot? I really would like to be a bit
sure, before I throw in big $$$.
Are there any other ideas of things that could be wrong?
