Yes, there is a ground inside the boot attached to the license plate bolt (a
particularly poor location for many reasons), and there might be another one
I'm unaware of on your year (mine is 66, so far fewer electrical dinguses).

I suppose it is also possible that you accidentally shorted out or
disconnected some other part of the harness while doing this. As a speedy
test or temporary fix, try running a new wire( any old way) from the fuse
box ignition-on side directly to the fuel pump power terminal, just to see
if it works. If it does, just route that wire somewhere safely out of the
way, tape it down, drive to the shop, and worry about tracking down the
problem later.
