Hello Gang,

I'm not just a little embarrassed to tell you this. Last
night, my 15 y/o son and I got a few moments to tinker
with the MGB-GT. It has always run 'okay' but not great
since the rebuild. And since I hadn't really taken time to
tune everything, I assumed the mediocre performance
was a tuning issue. I was wrong.
Allen said, "Hey Dad, which direction does the distributor
turn?" "Counter-clockwise.", I answered in my best old
sage voice, "Look at the little arrow on the casting." Allen
then said, "Then why are the plugs wired 1-3-4-2?"
"What!?", I replied, sensing that uneasy feeling coming
over me. Sure enough, I had miswired plugs 2 and 3!
I mean, I know better than this BUT, I still screwed up.
We, with excitement, rewired the plugs and jumped in
for a test. Whir, zoom! It instantly leapt to life smooth
as silk -- at 2500 rpm. We of course, had the idle speed
set WAY too high as it was adjusted when two cylinders
were being drug along rather than contributing. We shut
the engine down, went through a whole new carb linkage
alignment procedure and tried again. Smooth as silk at
800rpm! Advance, 10 degrees BTDC. Beauty.
So this is a success story, if not just a little embarrassing.
I guess another nice part about the List is that you can be
completely honest about your bone-head moves knowing
that at least a few of your friends have "been there, done
that."
