You do a wet and dry compression test. The wet test consists of putting
about a tea-spoonful of oil into each cylinder. If the compressions go up
significantly any low readings are due to bore/ring wear, if they don't it
is valves or something else like a holed piston. But bad valves can usually
be heard in the exhaust and intake.
