First, check to see if you are using the right gasket.  Often in the kits you
get a paper/cardboard gasket.  What you need is a metal gasket, with a fiber
core.  Most auto parts shops or muffler chop should be able to supply it.

Sealant is not necessary, and even the copper type can't take the heat.

Make sure the bolts are tight.

There is supposed to be a strap from the downpipe to the bell housing.  If
this is missing, it can lead to excessive play and will lead to either the
gsket blowing, or worse, the manifold cracking.
