Sounds like the gauge is bad.  When the car has sat overnight the gauge should
read the ambient temp.  The thermostate had no affect on the temperature of an
engine after it sits all night.  If you have an electric gauge, to  see if
it's wired right, disconnect the terminal.  It should read as low as possible.
If it is a mechanical gauge, it has to be repaired/replaced.

You can add the OD to a standard 4 synchro, but it is more than just bolt on.
some interior parts have to be swapped.  It may be easier to just replace the
synchros.

I have seen where the shfit lever has been cut down and threaded though I
think you need a lathe to turn it down, then a regular die should work.
Depending on the year, you may need to cut a slot in the threads for the wires
for the OD switch.
