Hmm, after about a month of similar behavior, my diff self-destructed. So,
to save yourself the tedious effort of cleaning out the bits of shredded
metal from the axle housing, I recommend you do something before matters
reach that state. 

Read through the procedures for disassembling and renewing the differential
in the manual to see if it sounds like something you want to attempt. If
not, you will need to find someone to do it for you; or you could swap out
the entire diff unit for a good one (this is what I did, since there was
little left of the original).

The gas tank is not an issue; however, the rear springs will need to be
removed (or at least the rear hangers disconnected).
