i finally drove my '78 convertable today, down to get it inspected (no
hassles about the absence of a catalyst). the car is newly converted
to dual HIF4 carburetors, has a new Maniflow steel exhaust manifold,
new rotors, new rubber brake lines, new lower control arm bushings,
new distributor (not really new but a 41288 model from an early '70's
MGB), new tappet chest gaskets, freshly flushed brake fluid in all
hydraulics, manual choke (installed through the dash in a switch blank
above the hazard flashers).
It is running great! and i am _so_ happy.

I could not inspect the driver side rear brakes because one of the
screws that hold down the brake drum was badly stripped out. i believe
that the rear brakes are OK. I looked at the "off side" brake shoes
and they had plenty of material left and no axle oil and they adjusted
fine.
Back to the drum retaining screw on the driver side. I soaked
it. tapped on it soundly, drilled it out and then broke off an
extractor in the hollow screw. the "easy out" is made of very hard
metal(vanadium alloy i think). So the $10K question is how to extract
the Extractor (and hopefully the screw with it).
