 If this were the case I would expect oil to be leaking from the hole at the
 bottom of the bell-housing.  My clutch has been tending to judder during
 engagement at low revs since shortly after replacement.  I just use
slightly
 higher revs and live with it.

 If reverse grinds that indicates the clutch hasn't fully disengaged.  Check
 the travel of the slave piston, it should be about 1/2".  Less than this
and
 it needs bleeding.  If you have this travel, and if the 'biting point' is
 what you would describe as 'normal' when compared to other cars then that
 indicates some mechanical problem with the clutch.  My factory V8 does
 exactly what you describe when used infrequently, sometimes I cannot get it
 into 1st or 2nd and have to get it rolling in3rd.  Lack of use is the
 reason, a bit of clutch slip or a good long hard drive 'fixes' it for a
 while.
