There is a ground wire as you say, but it feeds the reverse lights, side
markers and the fuel pump. The number plate lights used a body ground on
early cars and a wired ground on later, generally depending on whether they
were on the bumpers (body ground) or number plate (wired). GT lights ground
in the same way as roadsters.
