I was in a similar position with the brakes. The Brake servo was 
somewhat sensitive although the brake pedal was very firm. I dis
connected the vacuum to the servo (and plugged the other end).

The car has been this way for 8 years with no ill effects. Yes the 
brake pedal needs a higher effort BUT it now gives a very good feel
of what the brakes are doing. This is a great advantage in the rain when
a wheel wants to locks up.
