That'll work. Be careful not to get the 'simple stick' misaligned so
that it bends or scars the piston/cylinder as the piston rises in the
bore.
When the piston reaches the top of it's stroke the crank will have less
effect on the movement of the piston, so you will have several degrees
of movement in the crank with little movement of the piston. A dial
gauge would be a lot more accurate and overcome this issue, but it is
probably not necessary.
