During manufacture, because of accuracy limitations on the production
machines it was not possible to get the diameter of the cylinder boring
exactly "right". It was possible however to quickly measure the finished
diameter and grade each cylinder according to how much it varied from the
nominal bore. This grading was then stamped on the top of the block along
side each cylinder.

Pistons were similarly graded and stamped.

At the assembly stage, piston and cylinder grades were matched to get the
best possible fit.
