Don't know where you've been.  Synthetic 20W50 hs been out for several years.

Synthetic oil does not leak any more or less than mineral oil.  Synthetic oils
have a lower surface tension for easier flow, so what happens is that a drop
the size of a dime with mineral oil becomes the size of a quater with
synthetic.

All in all, synthtetic oil does what all the additives claim to do.  Go for
it, but don't believe the claims that you can go 25K between changes.
