According to Clausager's "Sprites & Midgets ..." the VIN
number is the number on the plate in the engine
compartment. "... a late North American specification MG
miget could have a chassis number such as G-AN6-UJ/200001-G.
The first G signifies a MG
The last G means it was made in the MG factory. Some
Sprites were made at Morris and the Vin number ends in M.
The J after the U signifies the year:
A=1770
B=1971
C=1972
E=1973
E=1974
F=1975
G=1976
H=1977
J=1978
L=1979
The number on the RIGHT-hand front door pillar is the BODY
number. There is also a commision number somewhere, the
location not mentioned. "For some strange reson, many BMC
cars seem to have two body numbers, ... "
"Summing up, the one really important number is the CAR
NUMBER or CHASSIS NUMBER, and if you find that the number on
the plate unde the bonnet does NOT match the number on your
documentation, then there is a problem!"
If you want to know the original colour or specification, it
would probably be on a Heritage Certficate. Clausager says
nothing about the color being part of the VIN number like
the TF and early MGA.
