In 1968 for the Beetle.  They went to 12 volt and negative earth at the 
same time.  That's what this electronic regulator is listed for, so it does 
not fit any application prior to 1968.  Being specifically a VW part, it 
does not list any non-VW applications.  Not too surprising, as most cars 
were switching to alternators by 1968.

As another matter of curiosity, the first line of the applications list on 
the package says "Sedan 68-94".  I'm guessing the Beetles had alternators 
sometime before 1994.  Can anyone verify that?  If so, it looks like this 
same electronic regulator could be used for either generator or alternator 
applications.  Also listed, Safari 74-78, Brasilia 74-82, Combi 78-91.
