Carb heat shield on mga....

I just bought a new pair of SU's with intake manifold for my MGA roadster. 
The new setup didn't come with a heat shield, and I was wondering if it was 
an absolute necessity to have it installed. I have one from a previous carb 
setup so I can use one if necessary. Is this carb intake heat shield that 
important? Any comments are appreciated........
