MGB SPRING COMPRESSOR

I am planning to replace the front bushings with Urethane ones.  I wonder if 
it is necessary to use a spring compressor or is there a work around.  Also if 
one is needed is there a special type.  I have seen them in catalogs of all 
descriptions.
Experience counts, can someone lend me some?
