looked so far (I've read your 'guru' pages, so that was a preferred
choice) - always unavailable.

I bought Kumho Euro Metric 771 last fall.  I like them even better than
the 
Dunlop tires I have been using for the past decade (now out of 
production).  Very good tire for the price.  Unfortunately currently
B/O'd

They do have a Firestone tire in stock (same link), but as I personally 
would never buy another Firestone product, I have no experience with
this one.

Yup.  For road wheels, for sure.  Impact and chip resistalnce is much 
better with powder coat.
