David -
Mine opens only if you press the button in with the palm of your hand, fingers
toward the front of the car, pressing on the decklid, while simultaneously
pulling up on the thumbhold of the latch with your other hand.

Using this technique, opens easily and immediately every time. just pushing
the release button and pulling up will never do it.
Have never been able to work out exactly what combination of forces it is that
makes this technique work, but it does.
And as the lock seems to be broken, it's just as well, so I leave it alone.

cheap ratchet set, rags, and half empty container of motor oil i have in the
trunk)

Now that my 72B is on the road again, running like a charm, another problem
crops up. For the most part, my trunk lid pops right open when I press the
latch. Every once in a while, I have had problems getting it open. This
time, it is down for the count. My normal non-damaging prying and twisting
  is having no effect.

So now how do I get the trunk open now? Denise mentioned drilling a small
hole somewhere on or near the latch but I can't seem to find the message in
the archives. I'm also contemplating a small hole in the bulkhead below
the seats in order to maybe get a rod back and get at the latch from there.

I know this has been a common topic but for some reason my search in the
archives has not yielded any relevant results. So can anyone fire me back
some quick, experienced, and hopefully painless suggestions?

  David
