Dear List,

A couple of days ago we've removed the distributor, cleaned it, exchanged the
points and capacitor and adjusted the points. Today we've put it all together
and the result was disappointing. A rough running engine with timing too much
advanced.

What I did:

- Roll engine in TDC position of cylinder 1.
- Remove distributor cap, check whether rotor points in direction of nr. 1
- Remove 2 bolts which mount the distributor against engine.
- Remove distributor, remove points and capacitor
- Mark and remove weight springs and weights
- Clean everything
- Assemble everything and adjust point to 0.015 in.
- Mount distributor and adjust static timing to approx. 10 deg. before TDC.
- Connect vacuum advance.
- Start engine

With the timing-light we could see that the "dynamic" advance was
way to much advanced. Engine was running rough. While I tried to retard
a little by turning the vernier knob the engine was running worse! (Note, I
was not capable of retarding more than approx. 45 deg. before TDC with
this vernier knob) Next thing we did was stopping the engine as soon as
possible. In order to avoid damage.

We've removed the distributor again and I'm planning to replace the old
points and capacitor again.

Hope somebody can point me in the good direction. What could we have
done wrong (besides transforming a well running engine into a rough
running engine :-) Don't fix it if it...
