I don't know if this is normal or not.  The zenar diode acts to prevent
alternator burn out,  It apparerntly didn't work (VBG).

What happens is that if there is corrosion or something elso that reduces  the
voltage to the indicator, the alternator will overcharge the system.  The
diode prevents this.  Apparently when you had the meltdown, the diode was
destroyed.
