If the pump still clicked when the fuel pipe to the carbs was blocked off,
and you have an SU pump, then either the non-return valves in the pump are
faulty (possibly dirty fuel which could affect the carb too) or there is a
suction-side air leak. If fuel pumps into a container satisfactorily (at
least 1pint per minute) then there should be enough fuel in the carb to
start even if you get starvation at full throttle because of the faulty pump
valves. Is there fuel in the carb float chamber? Is there dirt in there?
What are the plugs like after you have cranked for a bit? Soaking wet means
the engine is flooded, and you can usually smell the fuel when this happens
anyway. No fuel smell on the plugs means no fuel is getting through. They
should smell of fuel quite strongly but not be wet.

Has the timing slipped? You can use a timing light even when cranking to
see if it is way off or not, something around 10 degrees BTDC should be OK,
but with manifold vacuum to the carbs it may be higher than this. Check for
a spark at all of the plugs when cranking, just clip on a timing light and
watch the flashes. Also check your firing order - 1 3 4 2 anti-clockwise,
and make sure the rotor is pointing to No.1 at the top of its compression
stroke.
