Haven't seen the article, but would guess that the foam is a medium to
high-density urethane foam. It's available commercially and is akin to the
self-skinning insulating spray foams from the building suppliers, only much
denser. We use it for exhibit substrates. Very nasty stuff and requires
supplied-air respirators to be safe.
