Irritating history for last two weeks:
Everything started with 79B's ignition light coming on and staying on while
driving. Replaced alternator (18ACR with bad diodes) with the 17ACR out of
the parts car. Ignition light didn't come on anymore, but car died while
driving. Battery drained. Had battery checked. Battery bad. Replaced.
Checked alternator, it's bad. New alternator installed which is putting out
over 14 volts at 1000 RPM. Ignition light still off. Checked bulb and the
bulb was out of it's socket. Put bulb in and it works temporarily. Next time
I drive car, ignition light does not come on. Drive it at night for about 45
minutes with lights and heater on. Car dies while running within a block of
home. Go get truck to tow it home. Tow it into drive and wife turns on
lights and they seem bright. Starts car and drives into garage. The next
day, I checked the battery and it is low. Recharged battery and checked
alternator output on both brown wires; over 14 volts. With ignition on,
battery voltage in brown/yellow wire to alternator, but no ignition light.
Checked ignition light bulb's continuity and it has continuity. Reinstalled
bulb. Installed new points, condensor, distributor cap, and wire leading
from dizzy halfway to coil. Drove car 150 miles during day, and it did
fine. Tonight I drove it to town during daylight. Got in after dark, turned
lights on and drove 2 miles and the tach dropped to zero and the car died.
Very little lights, car just clicks when trying to start. Towed car home.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Monte
