Hello Listers,
My name is Pat and I have an MGB problem... ;-) I've been lurking on your
list for a while and I could use some advice. We bought a '77 MGB last summer
as our 20th Anniversary present... We're the 5th owners of this car so you
can imagine that there has been some "stuff" done to it. Lowered front end,
Panasport wheels... As I work through whatever comes up I keep finding more
and more, some good (electro-optical ignition upgrade), some other (this brake
thing). I'll get to the point. Car was running, put up on dollys and pushed
to the back of the garage in November. Rolled it out last month and found
the brake reservoir empty. Turns out, evidence the bubbled, pealing, and
rusting paint on the inside of the engine compartment all under the MC that
this is not the first MC leak for this car. Don't know why I didn't notice it
sooner...(hum) Anyhow, after removing and disassembly of the MC per the shop
manual I initially thought that the leak was coming from the PFWS port. The
threads on the switch were all stripped and the port was rusty. So I order a
standard rebuild kit and rebuild away (per the shop manual). I get the thing
back on only to find out... you guessed it, it's still leaks, from the
MC/Servo interface. Turns out, based on some previously unnoticed
discoloration on the face of the servo canister below the MC that's probably
where it's been leaking from all along, past the primary piston seal. Here's
what I've got:

1. '77 MGB.
B. a wedge shape reservoir.
3. a non-centering pressure failure piston.
d. a black plastic Pressure Failure Warning Switch, with male electrical pins
(new).
4.5. a "dangling" (no pun intended) male connection for said switch, old and
spliced.
e thru j. new standard seals.
Total: a leaky MC.

Is the bore too worn out for a standard seal kit? Do you think the thing has
been rebored and, surprise, the standard seals leak?
I can get a reman'd MC ready to mount from Apple Hydraulics for $125 or new
from Moss for $225 or keep trying to work this one $? ($43 so far). Any body
delt with Apple? Other ideas?

WWYD? Thanks,

Pat
