Hello Friends,
I got a little Midget work done this afternoon. Nothing wild
mind you, but progress. So often we talk about this problem
or that symptom. Today it's nice to chat about the good bits.
I reassembled my Weber DGV. As expected, the float level
adjustment was WAY off (like 10mm!) and the carb was mildly
dirty inside. I will drain the fuel and refill before I restart it. The
PO promised that he had flushed the tank after it had sat for a
year. Obviously, he did not. The fuel is old and really stinky.
I also pulled the valve cover in preparation for a complete valve
adjustment. The valve cover on my '76 is crinkle black but was
looking pretty shabby. I cleaned the cover inside and out and
repainted the exterior with semi-gloss black engine paint. It looks
new. The oil filler cap is a parts-store generic replacement and
also looked shabby. It is now gloss black and looks correct.
I plan to clean and paint the head, just a detail touch-up mind
you, and respray the exhaust manifold with header paint.
I also plan to reroute the crankcase gases through a hose to
down under the car. Oily exhaust blow-by lowers the effective
octane of the inlet charge. No, it's not the nicest thing to do from
a greenie viewpoint but given that I drive the car at most, an hour
a month, I don't think I'll be trashing too much air. Carb stays
MUCH cleaner too.
Other than that, the engine bay just needs to be cleaned and
one 'red' heater hose replaced with black hose.
Hope your weekend was a fun.

Best regards,

rick
