Yes, the lighter was a dealer installed item, but on to Mike's question:
Get a generic lighter socket/power supply.  They are avail with a plastic
cap and on a mounting bracket.  I think I got mine at a Meijer, so I would
suspect Wal-Mart would have 'em, or any chain autoparts store.  A neg ground
car makes it real easy, positive ground iffy due to need to isolate.  You
can mount it facing down over the tunnel area under the dash.  Use the dash
support as a mounting point.  Grab a power and connect (using your favorite
connection method) it to a fuseable link, then to the lighter.  Ground and
you're done!
Seems a power supply is always necessary regardless of the vintage of the
car.  I don't have gps, still the maps flying around, but I really enjoy my
XM!
