Tools to help with clutch bleeding

So I see a number of little gizmos for helping out with bleeding a 
cluch/brake line.  How do they work?

Also I've seen reference to "reverse bleeding".  Sounds like the basic 
idea is you pump/force fluid into the system from the bleed valve and 
let the air "burp" out the top.  This about right?
