Substitution is the only way to fault these units, unlike good old reliable
points.  Points would be the best thing to substitute with but if your
distributor is the original type this probably isn't possible, however for
the purposes of diagnosis you could substitute an earlier points-type.
Apart from that you are reduced to making sure all the connections are good
and checking to see if the conductors have broken inside the insulation of
the wires to the pickup, these are continually flexing back and fore as the
throttle position and hence vacuum changes ... unless pinned.
