I think it is excessive sun and heat that is the problem, and unless you let
it cool right down with the tonneau fastened it may well shrink back again
if removed hot, and may do anyway.  I recently bought a replacement tonneau
that had the windscreen pillar snaps instead of the lift-the-dot fasteners
(it was brand-new but shop-soiled and very cheap).  I cut some strips of
vinyl off the old cover with lift-the-dot fasteners attached and sewed them
onto the leading edge of the new one.  Strikes me you could do much the same
with yours.
