I don't think I'm being overly alarmist. Obviously, all I know
about California's laws is what I read on this and other mailing
lists from other Californians complaining about tham. But in
addition to the limits California law places on new models
available in the marketplace, it imposes quite a burden on the
owners of older cars. We've had emissions testing here in
"urban areas" for about 10 or 12 years. At the risk of offending
some list members down south, almost everything that's made
Washington a worse place to live in in the last generation are
things that have made it more like California. Some laws at the
behest of California carpetbaggers, some at the instigation
of "me too" types who want to play the government game like
the big guys. Either way, this will be a watershed event and
it will accomplish nothing except to give more power to
the state and reduce the diversity of vehicles we have to
choose from.
