I saw the article mentioned. My 1960 MGA 1600 does NOT work in this manner. 
I've owned it since 1970. I've had the switch apart a couple of times. IIRC, 
the switch handle butts up against a solid area when the handle is turned to 
about 45 degrees from vertical.

Perhaps the writer of the MGA! article had an aftermarket switch in his 
vehicle?
