I wouldn't think you have a head gasket or worn ring issue.  Most MGB's
run compression from 145 to 160.  I'm surprised to see 175 on any of them
- but it's not outside of what a high compression MG engine should do (see
www.mgaguru.com).  With this kind of situation, I'd fix the EGR (actually,
I would plug the intake and put a little breather filter on the EGR line
off the side plate), adjust the valves, and be happy driving it.  I
wouldn't even consider pulling the head at this point.
