Workshop Manual specifies (paraphrasing) "Armstrong Super (Thin) Shock
Absorber Fluid No. 624. If not available use any good-quality mineral oil
to specification S.A.E 20, but this is not suitable for low-temperature
operation" presumably because it is too stiff. Use light hydraulic jack oil
a'la Halfords. Motor Cycle damper oil is often recommended is it is
supposed to have a seal swelling agent which in theory reduces the onset of
leaking and replacement/rebuilding. But normally you can expect a life of
tens of thousands of miles out of them anyway.
