I have a MGA 1600 with a late Tecalemet oil filter. I got a paper
filter relacement for it. When I disassembled the filter, there was no
washer between the spring and the old paper filter. I got a replacement
washer with a dome that fits into the bottom hole of the paper filter
cannister, but the center hole diameter in the washer is too small for
the bolt. Without the spring, the paper filter cannister does not
appear to be long enough by itself to snug up to the top portion of the
filter housing .(with the bypass valve). With the existing spring and a
zinc washer from my workbench, the cannister is too long and I cannot
get the bolt to seat into the engine block. Here are my stupid
questions. Do you use the spring with the paper filter cannister?
Where can you get a correct washer if you should use the spring?. Should
I just drill out the new washer's center hole (the metal appears to be
very thin)? Can I just use the zinc flat washer? Are there any tricks
to getting the gasket between the top filter housing and the engine
block to stay in place when fitting the top housing back into place?
Any practical "how to's" on filter replacement for the MGA? Thank you.
