FWIW the pukka tool is a flat ring with four plain studs to line up with the
holes in the flange, and an arm welded on one edge which 'leans' on one edge
or the other of the transmission tunnel according to whether one is doing up
or undoing.

  Putting it in 1st gear is a good call.  Maybe if I can get a scrap clamp
around the flange to hold it I'll be able to get it to torque to 150lbs.
