71 MGB Hood/Top Question

Does the bow that attaches to the vinyl/canvas just above the rear window need
to be detached before folding down? My old top had straps with snaps to hold
onto the bow. My new top has Velcro, and is a pain to do/undo every time I put
the top up/down. Perhaps I've been doing this wrong all these years.
