The halogen bulbs sold by LBC work well. Polishing the reflectors
helps too.
Another way to achieve more illumination is to install a second socket
in the blank part of the chromed casting. The casting has a flat
section, behind the reflector, than can be drilled to accept a socket.
The reflector tends to focus the beam into a small diameter light that
shoots straight back at lamp height. The second lightbulb, without a
reflector, spreads a wider light, higher.
Third brake lights work best when closer to eye level of the driver
behind you. GTs are often fitted with them at the top of the back glass,
but I've not seen an aesthetically pleasing installation on an open MGB.
A third brake light mounted under a luggage rack is better than no light
at all, but its location is not ideal.
